Ateneo teaching assistant found dead inside campus By Marlon Ramos Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 18:02:00 06/30/2008 MANILA -- A teaching assistant was found dead inside the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) in Quezon City on Monday.
The body of Jose Lorenzo Tan, 24, a resident of Cubao, Quezon City, was discovered by a utility worker inside his room at the faculty building around 6 a.m. Monday, according to a report from the Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU).
Tan was last seen alive when he entered his room around 2 p.m. Sunday. He supposedly told watchmen that he would just finish his research assignment. Initial police reports say Tan died of suffocation.
An official statement of the Jesuit-run school said Tan, who finished his Bachelor of Science in Management Engineering from AdMU in 2006, “was found to have suffocated in a room” at the Department of Philosophy.
In a one-paragraph statement, the university asked the media to consider the request of the family to respect their privacy.
It said Tan worked as a teaching assistant, whose main task at the department was to do research.
“[Tan] had been feeling depressed for some time and investigation showed that he took his own life. The family requests that their privacy be respected at this time,” the statement read.
Sonia Araneta, head of the Communication and Public Relations Office of AdMU, declined to give other details of Tan’s death.
